Coconut Base Carbon Overview
Activated Carbon can be produced from any carbonaceous material such as coconut shells. Coconut shells are a renewable and sustainable choice. Coconut base GAC pores are small and uniform making it useful for the reduction of a smaller molecular contaminants.

Coconut Base Carbon Applications
Urbans Aqua sources coconut base carbons from Calgon Carbon and Jacobi Carbon. We recommend coconut for the following drinking water and commercial applications:
- Reduction of disinfection byproducts such as THM (trihalomethane)
- Reduction of chlorine
- Reduction of chloramine (catalytic carbons work best for this application).
- Pre-treatment Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems
Advantages
- Green renewable resource
- Competitively priced
- Superior hardness – fewer fines, low dust
- Will not leak byproducts such arsenic.
- Consistent quality, reliable sourcing
- Tight structure
Disadvantages
- Supply may be interrupted by weather conditions; pricing may be affected.
- Poor performance for removal of large color molecules

Activated Carbon Notes
Activated carbon adsorbs contaminants (adsorbates). The adsorbates stick to the pore; they are not absorbed into the carbon.
- Activated carbon used in residential applications should be NSF or WQA Gold Seal certified.
- For Point of Entry (POE) or whole house drinking water applications, 12×40 mesh is commonly used. 8×30 mesh is larger and 20×50 mesh smaller.
- Fine mesh activated carbon or carbon block is often used in the cartridges found in small Point of Use (POE) drinking water systems
Why buy from UA?
- All activated carbon products are certified to NSF/ANSI 42. Some products meet Proposition 65 Standards. Many drinking water products are produced under the supervision of the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA) and the Kashruth Division of the Orthodox Union for Kosher certification.
- UA assures product quality and consistently by sourcing through reliable, single source manufacturers Jacobi Carbon and Calgon Carbon®.
- Single source manufacturing ensures consistent product quality.
- The manufacturers source only raw materials tested to meet their specifications.
- The manufacturing process is strictly controlled and done in-house, not contracted out to secondary sources.
- Prior to shipment to our warehouses each lot is tested and certified to meet the specifications set forth in the product bulletin.
