Coconut Base Carbon Overview
Activated Carbon can be produced from any carbonaceous material such as coconut shells. Coconut shells are a renewable and sustainable choice. Coconut base activated carbon pores are small and uniform making it useful for the reduction of a smaller molecular contaminants.

Coconut Base Carbon Applications
Urbans Aqua sources coconut base carbons from Calgon Carbon, Jacobi Carbon & Haycarb. We recommend coconut for the following drinking water and commercial applications:
- Reduction of disinfection byproducts such as THM (trihalomethane)
- Reduction of chlorine
- Reduction of chloramine (catalytic carbons work best for this application).
- Pre-treatment Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems
Advantages of Coconut Base Activated Carbon
- Green renewable resource
- Competitively priced
- Superior hardness – fewer fines, low dust
- Will not leak byproducts such arsenic.
- Consistent quality, reliable sourcing
- Tight structure
Disadvantages of Coconut Base Activated Carbon
- Supply may be interrupted by weather conditions; pricing may be affected.
- Price volatility due to costs related to import.
- Poor performance for removal of large color molecules

Activated Carbon Notes
Activated carbon adsorbs contaminants (adsorbates). The adsorbates stick to the pore; they are not absorbed into the carbon.
- Activated carbon used in residential applications should be WQA Gold Seal certified.
- For Point of Entry (POE) or whole house drinking water applications, 12×40 mesh is commonly used. 8×30 mesh is larger and 20×50 mesh smaller.
- Fine mesh activated carbon or carbon block is often used in the cartridges found in small Point of Use (POE) drinking water systems
