Sources of Tannin

There are two primary categories of tannins or organics: Humic & Fulvic Acids. Tannins are naturally occurring as water passes through decaying vegetation and peaty soil. Surface water, or ground water contaminated with surface water, may have tannins. The color of the water can range from yellow to a dark tea. The odor is earthy or musty. The aftertaste can be tart or tangy.

Tannin Health Effects

There are no known health effects. Tannins present an aesthetic problem. They are unappealing to drink and may stain laundry.

Treatment Methods

Tannin removal presents treatment challenges country-wide because tannin properties vary by geography and season. A complete analysis including TOC (total organic carbons) is recommended.

Tannin removal is extremely regional. A simple pilot study with 8 to 16 ounces of resin in a refillable cartridge or counter top demonstration cartridge is recommended before applying.
Generally, macroporous type 1 ion exchange resins are suggested because tannins are large molecular weight compounds. However, tannin removal resin which works in one area of the country may not be effective in another. Before recommending the surest (and costliest) treatment for residential point of entry (POE), Purolite Tanex® ion exchange resin, UA experts work with dealers to determine the most effective solution.
Tannin removal often requires multiple tanks and treatment methods. Softening and iron removal equipment may be suggested as the presence of iron may cause a false positive (heme iron aka organic iron) when testing for tannin. Post-treatment of the water (pH adjustment) may also be required.
